On a Diet? Eating More Protein Can Help You Drop Those Extra Pounds

If you’re like most dieters, you’re probably trying the typical high-carb, low-fat diet. But adding in some protein may have you bikini-ready a little faster.

A new study in the Journal of Nutrition finds that a moderate-protein diet is a better choice for lowering body fat than a high-carb, low-fat diet. After following dieters for a year, researchers found that the protein also increased HDL or “good” cholesterol and cut triglyceride levels.

According to the study, a moderate-protein diet is defined as:
  • 30 percent of daily calories from protein, including lean meat, low-fat dairy, and nuts
  • 40 percent of calories from carbs
  • 30 percent of calories from fats

Researchers stress the point of planning when it comes to incorporating more protein into your diet. For instance, participants met with a dietitian who helped them plan weekly meals. While not all of us have that luxury, it can still be beneficial to do some advance planning to make sure you’re hitting the right balance of protein, carbs, and fats. Researchers also warn against the usual diet advice of eating small meals throughout the day. You should consume some protein at each meal, which will make you feel fuller so you’re not tempted to snack throughout the day.
